Melbourne helicopter rides are a fantastic way to see the city’s surroundings from high above. One of the best Melbourne helicopter tours is located along the Great Ocean Road. This once in a lifetime experience is one of the most unique ways to view the iconic 12 Apostles.

What to expect on the helicopter ride

If you’re considering a Great Ocean Road helicopter ride, we’re here to tell you that it’s totally worth it!

The helicopter ride lasts about 15 minutes and takes you soaring above some of the best scenery along the Great Ocean Road. From the helicopter you’ll be able to see the 12 Apostles, Shipwreck Coast and Port Campbell National Park. This viewpoint will also allow you to see Loch Ard Gorge and the Bay of Islands.

Be sure to keep an eye on the waters below as well. You may just be able to spot some incredible wildlife. Specifically between June and October, there is a good chance of spotting the resident blue whales!

About the 12 Apostles

Before visiting the 12 Apostles, why not learn a little about the landmark?

The 12 Apostles are made of limestone and have been created over millions of years. When the 12 Apostles were named, there were only 9 limestone pillars, but it was named “12 Apostles”.

Over the years, the limestone rock has continued to erode due to storms and the ocean waves. As a result, the rocks are slowly being destroyed and disappearing. Today there are only 8 Apostles left, but someday they will be all gone.

Join a Great Ocean Road tour

When you join our Great Ocean Road and 12 Apostles tour, you will have the chance to take an exciting helicopter ride.

The day begins as we depart from Melbourne and hit the Great Ocean Road. We stop for a yummy morning tea before visiting the historic Memorial Arch, which marks the beginning of the Great Oean Road.

As we weave along the scenic road, we’ll pass through towns such as Lorne and Wye River. We then stop for lunch at Apollo Bay, which is a charming seaside town with heaps of delicious food options. After lunch, we take a stroll at Melba Gully to see some picturesque cascades located within the rainforest.

The main attraction of the tour is the famous 12 Apostles. Here you can choose to walk to the lookout point, or take a scenic helicopter ride. It’s impossible to explain the incredible scenery as you take to the skies and view this iconic landmark from above. If you choose to take a helicopter ride, you’ll also get a sneak preview of our next stop.

After the 12 Apostles, we’ll make our final stop at Loch Ard Gorge. Here you can view the Razorback and Dumpling Pots. After a day full of sightseeing, we will take an inland route back to Melbourne.
