There are heaps of places to go surfing along the Great Ocean Road!
The Great Ocean Road is well known for its amazing surf and clean, consistent waves.
The annual surfing competition is held at the world-famous Bells Beach, just outside Torquay. This is where you’ll find the surf pros! But it’s not just for professionals. Amateurs can give it a go, too!
So, here’s how you can explore the surf of the Great Ocean Road if you are a beginner surfer.

What to look for when you’re a beginner surfer
If you’re a beginner and you’re just getting started, here’s what you can search for in the waves to make your first time on the waves much easier…
- Long lines of white water that are moving towards the beach
- Flat beach: the waves will break slowly
- Sheltered – the headland breaks the force of the waves, and they slowly get diluted
- Find white water: if you can spot some nice, clean, white-water waves, then you’ll be able to paddle and get onto your board – you’ll get used to the feeling of being on a board
- Beach facilities – easy parking, good surf schools, facilities, people around – look at where your surf school is located, you’ll end up.
When you’re surfing in the summer, you’ll also have access to more beach facilities – especially if you’re a beginner or inexperienced surfer – taking a lesson is a great idea because you’ll get the hang of the basics before heading out into heavier surf.
Ocean Grove

A favourite spot on the Bellarine Peninsula, Ocean Grove is a great spot for beginners who have more experience.
The conditions here are beginner friendly, with a headland shelter, providing a wind block from the southwest winds.
Torquay cosy corner
Known as the surf capital of the Great Ocean Road, Torquay is a popular spot for beginners.
The birthplace of Victoria’s surf culture, this cute beachside town is home to some great, beginner-friendly beaches. An area with forgiving, gentle waves. There’s a coastal walk near here, as well as nice grassy areas! The waves are sheltered, so they’re perfect for beginners. There are showers, toilets and lifeguards in the area too, so you’ve got plenty of time and space.
Anglesea Main Beach

Anglesea Main Beach is a great spot to go surfing! It’s the perfect spot if you’re a beginner, then you should dip your toe into the world of surfing!
The main beach at Anglesea has plenty of long, rolling waves that are very easily reachable. The sand at the bottom is soft, perfect for first-timers who are getting to grips with the balance of their board!
Point Roadknight
Not too far from Anglesea, you’ll get to Point Roadknight. It is a well-surfed spot by intermediate surfers. If you go in the summertime, you’ll have the added safety of beach patrols and lifeguards. Or paddleboard at sunrise/sunset, along the serene waves with gentle sets.
