The first feature film was filmed here, and then it was broadcast at the Athenaeum Theatre in Melbourne.
Thanks to its stunning, dramatic scenery and long expanses of beach set next to rugged coastlines, the Great Ocean Road has set the scene for many movies over the last few decades.
Plus, its easy accessibility and proximity to the main roads meant that film equipment could be easily transported to movie sets.

Now, the lighthouse is an iconic staple of Aireys Inlet, and a popular spot for many people to go and take Instagram-worthy photographs.
Visitors can view the iconic lighthouse, which perches on the tip of Aireys Inlet. Take a walk up the hill and get incredible sweeping views of the whole ocean!
Fairhaven Beach House, Mad Max
Now known as the famous pole house that supports a modern house that has a swish design, the Fairhaven Beach House is situated on the side of the Great Ocean Road and offers some incredible sweeping views.
George Miller’s 1979 movie Mad Max is all about a vengeful Australian police officer who fights a motorbike gang who are trying to hurt him. This action movie is a popular late 70s favourite.
You can see it easily if you drive past it! It’s between Lorne and Anglesea.
In the 1979 movie Mad Max, you’ll see Max’s base. In the movie, it looked like a small shack. But now, it’s a famous Airbnb that visitors can stay in!
This shack was the general backdrop for any scene at Max’s base. When you go past the Fairhaven Beach, you’ll see the house, which is now supported by a singular pillar. This unique design has attracted many guests over the years.
The founder of Boost Juice bought the property and then sold it in 2019, and has since rebuilt the house into a guest house. A single-storey apartment that overlooks the whole ocean – guests can enjoy sweeping views of the Great Ocean Road.

Fairhaven is a small coastal town that sits along the Great Ocean Road. If you immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the destination, you’ll get golden beaches and dramatic, rugged cliffs.
Fairhaven is a tiny area located along the Great Ocean Road. It is known as one of the longest beaches along the Great Ocean Road.
You can hike among the trails, visit the golden beaches on the side of the rugged cliff faces. It has one of the longest beaches, which stretches across 6km.
